Sun Surf and Science
Register to participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the fair must register in advance through this online form. We strongly encourage early registration in order to reserve enough tables. Registration deadline is April 16. When you register, please INDICATE THE JUDGING CATAGORY THAT YOUR STUDENT WANTS TO BE IN.
Projects should be student driven.
Project ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. Especially for young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids be able to present the project themselves.
Working with someone else.
You may work on your project independently, or you may work with a partner who is also a student at Saddle Peak Elementary, for example, a classmate or a sibling. Please register in the grade level of the OLDEST MEMBER of your group. So, if siblings are working together, please register in the grade level of the oldest sibling.
Need help choosing a project theme?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, the internet is full of resources to help you choose a topic. Does electricity make noise? What does yeast do? What happens in pond water?
Remember that a scientific question should be answerable, not an opinion, and able to be replicated.
Judging and awards.
While our goal is to encourage scientific exploration and discovery and promote a deep lifelong passion for science. We thought it would be fun to have some celebration.
Our judging categories this year will be one winner from each grade in a 'Crowd Favorite' category. And one overall winner for the following categories 'Most Colorful' 'Best Data Collection' 'The Grossest' 'The Loudest' and 'The Best Hypothesis'. Everyone who attends the science fair will receive a voting card to help choose the winners.
Submit your photos!
Parents -- while your young scientist is busy conducting that wild experiment, sneak out your camera and capture some shots. Then upload them here by April 17 We will have a slide show of all photos after the science fair.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the science fair wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers. We have several jobs to be done. If you can spare an hour or two on the day of the fair, we would love your help. We will need help at 2:30PM to help set up tables and tarps. Help at concessions anywhere from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Help running the sno-cone machine. Help tallying votes from 7:00PM to 7:30PM. Please contact Jessica Hunter at saddlepeakptx@gmail.com
Concessions
Pizza, water, soda, and snacks will be available for purchase in the cafeteria. Please keep all food in the commons. Let us know how you are able to help!
Set up and take down
Students and parents are responsible for setting up their projects and cleaning up their area at the end of the event. If you are volunteering, please let us know so we can expect you early! Otherwise, project check in and set up can start at 5:15PM. If you can come early to help us set up, please contact us at saddlepeakptx@gmail.com
